Guidelines for developers of smart systems

Technology has entered into the age of smart systems, when machines implement traditionally human functions of analyzing real-world data and making decisions. Developing such systems however is not trivial and deals with several challenges. In this paper we share our experience of building smart systems, such as user-aware computer display, viewer-conscious TV set, smart door, smart carpet, smart system for monitoring people with cognitive impairment at home, and mobile face recognition system. We identify challenges and present guidelines for hardware and software developers.
