As the microwave backscattering from bare soil surfaces is sensitive to the moisture content of the upper soil layer, radar remote sensing has gained a lot of attention by the hydrologic community, as it provides the potential for initializing and updating distributed hydrologic models. However, topography, soil roughness and vegetation cover also strongly influence the backscattered intensity.
