MPEG-21 part 17: URI-based fragment identification of MPEG resources

Addressing fragments of multimedia content is a functionality that more and more devices are expected to support in the near future. The fragment identifier specified by IETF RFC 3986 provides a URI-based mechanism for this purpose. However, the specification did not specify the structure and syntax of the fragment identifier and left it up to the owner of a media type. A number of URI-based addressing schemes have been defined, such as the W3C SVG svgView() pointer scheme and the pointer schemes of the XPointer framework. As the standardisation body that is responsible for the creation of some of the most highly successful video and audio formats of recent time, MPEG has recently pursued an initiative to develop URI-based fragment identification mechanisms for MPEG resources. The endeavour has lead to the creation of part 17 of the MPEG-21 framework, which specifies a number of powerful and extensible URI-based pointer schemes to enable the use of URI fragment identifiers in addressing spatio-temporal fragments and logical units of audio-visual resources.
