Using Labdoo to Bridge the Digital Divide: A New Form of International Cooperation

This chapter describes the socioeconomic factors that make the Labdoo Project possible and how its implementation can help us to understand a new breed of international aid organizations capable of solving global problems by using global means. The chapter starts the discussion, describing first project carried out in Guatemala. Secondly, it provides the basic Labdoo framework. Thirdly, it provides some brief study cases of minimissions carried out by several groups of volunteers distributed across the globe. Fourthly, it describes the benefits of Labdoo from a service-learning perspective, focusing on the specific perspective of the volunteers participating in the project. Finally, it provides a brief introduction to Project Wiki-Kids, a spin-off project from Labdoo that aims at connecting children of different nations by overlaying a network of knowledge sharing on top of Labdoo’s physical network of laptops.
