Green Networks and Communications

Cathryn Peoples, Gerard P. Parr, Sally I. McClean, Philip Morrow · 2012

This chapter explores concepts associated with the energy efficiency of networks and communication. It begins with a broad overview in terms of the background to the problem, the benefits to be achieved, and the objectives of green networking in general and of green protocols more specifically. Optimisation approaches to reduce the bit costs of protocols are presented, along with an analysis of minimum bit costs associated with a selection of traditional protocols. Network management approaches for green objectives from standardisation bodies are discussed next to appreciate current contributions in the field and the research gaps. The chapter concludes after consideration of a range of exemplar context attributes which require collection by network management systems deployed for the objective of improving efficiency.
