A Genetic Algorithm Based Approach For Generating Unit Maintenance Scheduling

Wathiq N. Abdullah · Al-Mustansiriyah Journal of Sciences · 2011

This paper presents the modeling and solving a maintenance scheduling problem in the modern generating systems. The system adopted solves this problem under several constraints and uncertainties, such as failures and forced outages of power equipment and delays in obtaining spare parts. The schedule often has to be revised at short notice. Human experts usually work out the maintenance scheduling by hand, and there is no guarantee that the optimum or even near-optimum schedule is produced. Genetic algorithms that have been used successfully in many search problems are used to solve the maintenance scheduling problem with less computational cost. The system uses genetic algorithm as a search method for an optimal schedule. The results obtained are promising and show that the resultant schedule provides enough capacity to meet the expected demand while minimizing costs.
