The Gunn effect

The purpose of this contribution is to outline the physics of the Gunn effect and to describe how the operation of devices can be modified by an external circuit. Only brief introductions are given to the various ideas involved, but it is hoped that a logical pattern will emerge that will allow some feeling for the subject to be obtained.
