Increasing demand for bandwidth usage has highlighted the spectrum utilization challenges for wireless sensor networks. Recent advancements in the area of wireless communication have introduced cognitive radio technology in wireless sensor network in order to overcome the spectrum scarcity problem. Cognitive wireless sensor networks, coexisting with wireless sensor networks are also dependent on limited energy resources. Besides typical sensing tasks; spectrum sensing and hand off along with bursty traffic demand extra energy of sensor nodes. Efficient energy utilization is one of the major concerns for these networks. In this paper, Fan Access Protocol (FAP) is introduced for cognitive network. This protocol effectively minimizes energy consumption and thus prolongs network lifetime using multi-hop routing based on optimal shortest path. Simulation results show that FAP performs better in terms of energy utilization and prolonging lifetime of network as compared to Fan-Shaped Clustering (FSC). A theoretical model for cognitive sensor network is also presented which uses coordinator nodes for spectrum sensing and data dissemination.
