Exploring the discrepancies between users' and designers' perception to identify users' real needs

The key factor for new products or services' success is to meet the needs of user, while it is difficult to identify potential needs since users have difficulty in expressing them or do not realize them at all. Previous researches have suggested that designers often could not predict users' views of the product and their preferences accurately. In this study, we explore the discrepancies, if any, between designers' and users' perception toward a set of application products in its concept design stage. We apply the Repertory Grid Technique (RGT), and Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) to quantify rich qualitative insights. One can minimize the gap between designers' and users' perceptions in end products by this way.
