This paper focuses on the current state of voice over Internet protocol in wireless mesh networks. Mesh network formation is dynamic, unpredictable and self-healing. Thus, voice traffic transportation in such networks requires special care in each mesh node and in the overall mesh network infrastructure so as to prevent the voice quality from degrading, possibly to the point where voice over Internet protocol services become unusable. Worldwide, researchers are actively working to improve the quality and reliability of such systems; as a result, various solutions have been proposed in the scientific literature. In this paper we survey some of the latest developments related to routing protocols, quality of service mechanisms, packet aggregation techniques, and new wireless standards that have been proposed for dealing with the above issue. We conclude with suggestions regarding new directions to address voice quality in wireless mesh networks.
