Vision, for most of us, is the primary sense that connects us so immediately with the outside world; yet we are remarkably unaware of the ceaseless activity of the six tiny muscles that determine where each eye is pointingand what we see. Eye movements are so precise, so fast, so promptly and slavishly obedient to our every whim – in short, so well-behaved – that it is easy to forget that they are there at all. What are they for?
