Requirements for the Development of Layered Information Models

Wim Gielingh · The MIT Press eBooks · 1992

Integration of software components (CIM modules) on a semantic level is a major issue for the realization of Enterprise Integration. Esprit project 2165 IMPPACT developed for this purpose an information reference model for CIM. It is used to specify neutral interfaces between software components. The model can be specialized to support the needs of specific enterprises. Some fundamental issues with the integration of information models on different levels of abstraction are addressed by the project. This leads to a proposed framework for layered models in which the meaning of concepts can be defined in a multi-dimensional modelling space. To support layered modelling, information modelling languages should support the definition of dimensions for specialization, discrimination and orthogonalization.
