Implementation of wireless data handling for environmental monitoring in livestock buildings

James A. Gray, TM Banhazi, Alexander A. Kist · 2013

Collecting, storing, managing and accessing large amounts of data on computers can become a tedious operation for users and can be resource demanding for systems. In order to prevent or remedy this, proven technologies can be utilised to reduce effort required by all parties. In 2009, an environmental monitoring system was designed developed and tested in Australia (Banhazi 2009b). This device allowed for the monitoring of a number of airborne pollutants, however was limited by restrictions in ease of use, most specifically the manual collection and collaboration of logged data from each unit. Developing networking functionality that can be integrated with the environmental monitoring system will not only improve the accessibility and effectiveness of the system, but reduce the overall maintenance required. This paper consists of the design and development of a software system that would be used to collaborate and store recorded environmental data from multiple farms. In order to design such a system, simplified software engineering processes and methodologies have been utilised. The main steps taken in order to complete the project were requirements elicitation with clients, requirements analysis, system design, implementation and finally testing. The outcome of the project provided a potential prototype for improving the environmental monitoring system and analysis dictating the benefit of the implementation.
