Representation, Information Flow, and Model Integration

Christopher Menzel, Richard J. Mayer, Leslie K. Sanders · The MIT Press eBooks · 1992

The central purpose of this paper is to explore the problem of model integration from a theoretical standpoint. After introducing the problem in Section 1, we begin with some a priori reflections on the nature of the problem in Section 2, which we then develop in the course of examining the dimensions of the problem space suggested in the Call for Participation in Section 3. We argue in particular for the necessity of a Global Representational Medium for facilitating integration. Finally, we argue that model integration should not be characterized in terms of translation, but in terms of the more general notion of information flow suggested by recent work in situation theory. We close by proposing a more formal definition of model integration and some related notions.
