Patterned Media: A Viable Route To 50 Gbits/in2 For Magnetic Recording?

Robert L. White, R.M.H. New, R. F. W. Pease · 1996

Progress towards very high density magnetic recording may soon be hindered by the superparamegnetic limit which imposes a lower bound on grain sizes in thin film media. Patterned media have been proposed as a means of circumventing this problem. Although no clear path exists for implementation of a patterned medium recording system, it is nonetheless worth considering some of the system-level problems and possibilities that would inevitably be associated with such a system. This paper examines some of these system-level issues, including implications for recording medial, recording heads, and timing.
