Technology and Business Drivers for the North Carolina Information Highway

In August, 1994, BellSouth, Carolina Telephone, and GTE began operation of the world’s largest commercial ATM network known as the North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH). The NCM provides 155 Mb/s (OC-3C) service 110 each customer site. 622 Mb/s (OC-l2C) access may be added by the end of 1995. The NCM initially supports only ATM Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs). Switched Virtual Circuit (SVC) capability is planned for 1996.
