Developing a low-cost GPS receiver for marine applications

T. Curry, F. Cassidy · 2003

The authors describe a state sponsored, industry/university partnership aimed at developing a low-cost GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver in the nonmilitary low dynamic environment. Such platforms include those found in recreational and commercial maritime applications, and those that might be used in automobiles and small aircraft. The objectives of the project are detailed as are the requirements analysis and definition, including both performance- and nonperformance-related requirements, to set the stage for the design approach. Conventional approaches in acquiring and tracking the GPS signal are discussed along with other techniques that are potentially less costly. The microwave electronics and the acquisition/tracking functions have been identified as critical subsystems in the context of the project objectives.>
