Emerging wireless network and mobile computing enable user-generated mobile video streaming to be shared and consumed in a novel manner. The feature of shared wireless medium, multihop data forwarding, and time-varying channel quality seriously limits the quality of experience (QoE), partially owing to the lack of mechanisms for effectively utilizing multi-rate channel resources. However, the existing algorithms for channel rate adaptation are solely based on the physical layer information without considering the performance requirements of the application. To address this issue, a cross-layer channel rate selection (CRS) algorithm is proposed for mobile video streaming in IEEE 802.11 based wireless multihop networks. By considering the sensitivity to the dynamic bandwidth resource, BRS optimally meets the bandwidth requirement of the video streaming at the application layer and channel conditions at the physical layer (e.g., RSSI and SINR). Moreover, extensive numerical simulations suggest that CRS is efficient and effective in meeting the bandwidth requirement of bandwidth-sensitive mobile streaming.
