It is always debatable just how far the immense amount of work necessary to prepare a work of this kind, and the correspondingly high cost, are justified. A scientific encyclopedia consisting mainly of long articles (of which there have been one or two outstanding examples in the past) does serve a useful purpose I think if it is limited to a fairly restricted field of science.
