Implementing a Fibre Channel SCSI transport

Robert Snively · 2002

The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) is a popular interface for the attachment of disk drives and many other peripheral devices. Each device type has a clearly defined logical model that can be used as the target of operating system device drivers. However, the SCSI physical interface has limits in performance and connectivity that are already being felt as restrictions in high performance desktop and server applications. The Fibre Channel is a serial interface with many physical transmission media options. The protocol uses a simple hierarchy of frames, sequences, and exchanges to implement a wide variety of upper layer protocols, including the SCSI Fibre Channel protocol. A practical implementation example shows how Fibre Channel overcomes the limitations of the SCSI physical interface.>
