Algorithmic State Machines

Tertulien Ndjountche · 2016

The algorithmic state machines (ASM) can be used to describe the operation of both state machines based on Moore and Mealy models, as well as of systems that have the output characteristics of both Mealy and Moore models. An ASM is a finite state machine based on a flowchart that can be used to represent the transitions between states and outputs. The control of combinational and sequential logic components such as adder, comparator, multiplexer, decoder, counter and register, which form the processing unit, ensures the synchronization of data operations. The control unit can be implemented as a finite state machine. The two methods used to represent finite state machines, ASM charts and state diagrams, are equivalent and interchangeable. An ASM chart can be converted to a state diagram and vice versa. ASMs find applications in various fields such as the design of circuits and systems, and process modeling and control.
