Dialogue in the flute works of Jean Françaix (1912-1977)

The concept that music can communicate and evoke an emotional response through itsexpression has long been accepted and parallels have been drawn between musical syntaxand that of language. The dialogue evident in the music of Jean Fraaix is such that themusic appears to effectively convey conversations between instruments. This paper willsuggest an original interpretation of the dialogue in several of Franaix's flute works, fromflute solo to wind quintet, the crafting of these conversations and the execution of them inperformance.
