Quantum computers: the first gate opens

A quantum computer would be a marvellous thing. It would be fast and versatile because each of its individual processors could exploit the quantum mechanical principle of superposition to carry forward many different computations in parallel. A quantum computer could crack cryptographic codes and recognize patterns in image processing applications that an ordinary computer could not.
