Network architecture frameworks to support real-time communication performance guarantees

Brian Field · 1994

Recent technological advances have motivated the development of a new class of applications, called multimedia applications. These applications exchange many types of information which require real-time performance guarantees. The design of network architectures to support real-time performance requirement guarantees is the focus of this thesis. In this thesis, two new network architectures which provide real-time performance guarantees are proposed. The first architecture, called ff-channel, provides service guarantees in a simple and efficient manner. A more advanced and enhanced architecture, called the Versatile Network Architecture (V-net), is then proposed. This framework provides for flexible support of communication requirements in real-time networks. Applications communicate over the V-net by using simplex end-to-end network connections which support specific real-time and reliability characteristics tailored to meet the application's specified requirements.
