A centralized database for a software maintenance toolchest

Kent Clayton Archie · 1993

The Ada Maintenance Toolchest (AMT) uses a large variety of data types. All data types are dependent on one another and the analysis tools are invoked as needed, rather than for each change in the source code. All the tools examine incremental changes in the source code and produce change records (deltas) for their internal data structures. The need for a large amount of complex data and the ability to add and remove tools easily is also found in CAD/CAM and office information systems. The use of deltas and the analysis on demand architecture require a database that takes an active role in the control of the tools. This project describes a database system that supports central database control to implement the analysis on demand and incremental analysis architecture of the AMT. The control flow through the system is determined by the graph of dependencies among the tool data structures. The use of a layered interface around a core data repository provides flexibility in adding new or existing tools to the system.
