This book is an excellent report of a remarkable venture – the Alvey Project. Undertaken in 1983 under the auspices of the UK government, the Alvey Project was designed to stimulate the UK information technology industry and to help its connections with research. It covered several domains–microelectronics, software engineering, knowledge bases, architecture, man-machine interface, speech processing, etc. These domains have also been covered by the European (EC) project ESPRIT, which started at the end of 1983.
