Abstract. There is an increasing need for adaptivity in distributed software systems. The concept of “roles ” has been put forward in literature as a promising approach to allow objects to evolve over time. In this paper, we propose to use roles for modeling adaptable distributed software systems. In particular, we study the use of Aspect-Oriented Software Development for designing and implementing roles: we compare six options that have been proposed in literature, select one and extend it in order to be able to meet our specific requirements: dynamicity and separation of concerns. We prototyped the approach with a case study in computer network management. 1
