We investigate the performance of a wireless sensor network composed of a number of IEEE 802.15.4 clusters interconnected in a linear structure. To equalize node lifetime, we utilize randomized sleep at the individual node level and rotation of the bridge role among the nodes located in shared areas between the clusters. Our Markov chain analysis indicates that the proposed mechanism is capable of achieving fair distribution of energy consumption among nodes and the resulting maximization of network lifetime.
