New Feet for 5 Years a Minute

Jo Van Den Berghe · Figshare · 2024

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: This is an artistic, transdisciplinary research project led by Van Den Berghe in collaboration with composer Jeroen D'hoe. In 2011, a spatial and audio-visual live performance of the work took place at Concertgebouw Brugge, with Spectra Ensemble, conducted by Filip Rathe. The concert was preceded by an introductory lecture and exhibition. The public was then granted access to the main stage where they took place between the musicians and the spatial installation with tilting projection panels in order to maximally participate in the "spatial sound experience." RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: The project examined the synaesthesia of architecture, video and music to generate new compositional possibilities. Through their shared imaginations of sensory experiences both researching artists explored and demonstrated 'other' concepts of time-space combinations. By borrowing compositional principles from each other, both disciplines (architecture and music) can develop new creative tools (new knowledge) through architectural-artistic creation (research-in-and-through-the-arts), and they can grow towards each other, into a trans-discipline with extended possibilities. It realised groundbreaking, 'whirling' time-space experiences through and in the making of virtual case studies, leading to a study of time as a compositional tool in architectural design. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The significance of the project is evidenced by the public performance of the work at the prestigious concert hall in Brussels, in collaboration with the internationally-recognised Spectra Ensemble. In 2013, it culminated in the publication of a book (of the same title), by Acco, Brussels. The project received funding of 62836,01 Euros for 6 years from KU Leuven, spanning 6 years.
