An Incremental Approach for Artistic Generation of Visual Randomness

Beibei Wang, Jemery Wambecke, Alban Fichet · 2016

Visual art appeared to be a successfull medium of non-verbal expression and is widely used in working environments such as corridors. Unfortunately, satisfying all individual preferences and tastes remains an open problem. Because they are based on education and culture, individual affinities with respect to plastic constructions prevent global and brute-force approaches. We propose a new on-the-wall framework based on incremental aggregations of items. Our method allows for individual expression while preserving high quality group satisfaction. Every day, all corridor inhabitants are invited to increment the current piece of art. Each item addition stimulates passers-by's attention and reactivates the iterative collective process. The process automatically stop when all allocated space have been used. We implemented our method in a real working environment. We show that our incremental aggregations bypass previous works in random art generation in less than one month.
