Optimized GAF protocol based sleep/awake protocol for WSN to improve Network Lifetime

In recent time, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is getting popular in wide range of applications. WSN is the network of Sensor Nodes (SNs) in which each node have sensing, communication and computation facility. The main limitation of WSN is that SNs have limited energy. So the main focus of research in WSN is to improve the Network Lifetime by plummeting energy consumption. Several locations aware routing protocol has been proposed in literature for this purpose. Geographic Adaptive Fidelity (GAF) is a location aware routing protocol that divides the network into grids and make one node active at a time from each grid to sense data. Its enhancement, Optimized GAF, proposed earlier, improves the network lifetime by improving the discovery phase. In discovery phase Optimized GAF saves the sequence of next active nodes in advance on the basis of higher residual energy of nodes. This paper improves the selection further considering their distance from Base Station (BS) thus improving the overall Network Lifetime. Comparison is done between Optimised GAF (Base Protocol) and Proposed Protocol on the basis of Network Lifetime and Energy Consumption. Both the protocols are implemented in MATLAB. Results show that the proposed protocol is better than basic protocol.
