Research Methods for Advanced Web Searching
Alastair J. Allan · 2016
This chapter not only describes the best ways of using a search engine but also tries to explain the best methods for using the web as a research resource. It involves explaining how information on the web can be best found and explaining extensive sites that can be missed by search engines. Researchers starting their career now have always known and used the web. There are two important but related issues. The first is the size and extent of the web, and the second and central point of the chapter is that many researchers do not understand how to use the web most efficiently as a research tool and, therefore, how to harvest information from the of the web. Several studies suggest that web searchers expect the best answer to be among the top one or two hits in the results listing.
