Service oriented integration
Derek Dominish, Michael Mathers · 2013
With the recent adoption of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach to application development within defence worldwide, there is a need to provide architectural guidance coupled with infrastructure mechanisms to assist developers with implementation. This paper discusses research conducted by the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO). Firstly, it describes how an application can be assembled from separate components to form a Composite Application and secondly, how components can be interconnected using a common patterned approach to infrastructure based upon open standards. Changing to a SOA approach can lead to system designers, developers and integrators facing new challenges. The processes used may need to be adapted to produce high performance software that is safe and secure. However, it is proposed that the benefits in terms of deployment flexibility, component reuse and scalability, among others, are advancements worth pursuing in integration of airborne platforms. These themes are explored through both a discussion of the approach and in reference to experience with representative systems developed at DSTO.
