Legal challenges for privacy protection and identity management
Jos Dumortier, Caroline Goemans · 2004
Privacy protection and identity management are essential for the development of a digital economy. Over the last years, these issues have been tackled from a technological, social, economic and legal viewpoint in a considerable number of conferences, seminars, workshops, books, journal articles and research reports. From a legal perspective, the efficiency of the current regulatory framework has been thoroughly questioned. In parallel, platforms have been developed to open up the nature of the traditional legal framework through selfregulatory initiatives such as codes of conduct, industry guidelines, seal programs, standardization documents, etc. Up till today however, it is generally admitted that in the field of on-line privacy legal security for the public and private sector as well as transparency for citizens and consumers are not present yet at an acceptable level in Europe.
