Erythrocytes are the main component of the blood and contain haemoglobin. The main function of erythrocytes is to transport oxygen from lungs to tissues and carbon-di-oxide from tissues to lungs. When the size of erythrocytes varies then they form Poikilocyte cells. Iron deficiency anaemia is characterized by Poikilocytes such as Degmacyte, Dacrocyte, Schistocyte, Elliptocyte. Iron is necessary for the production of haemoglobin, With its deficiency, erythrocytes become smaller in size, change their shape and becomes paler in color than normal. In the present paper, the normal RBC and poikilocyte cells have been classified using Artificial Neural Network, based on the extracted features. At the instant, blood disorders are recognized by the visual review of digital images by analyzing alteration in the color, size and statistical analysis of digital images. Pre-processing, Segmentation, Morphological operations, Feature extraction and Classification steps have been applied to the blood smear microscopic images to identify the cells. Separation of overlapped cells has been done automatically, efficiently and accurately. The entire work has been developed in Matlab environment.
