Dynamic adaptive streaming in named data networking

Yunfeng Shao, Xiaobin Tan, Xiangyang Wu · 2016

As the representative architecture of the future network, Named Data Networking offers significant benefits for content distribution: the content could be cached in the router which reduces network traffic and enhances user-perceived quality-of-experience(QoE). In dynamic adaptive streaming, video of different quality is segmented in sever, client could select the most appropriate segment to download due to the network status, this approach also improves the user-perceived QoE. In this article we not only investigate the implementation of dynamic adaptive streaming over NDN, video segments are formatted according to MPEG-DASH and NDN is used for data delivery, but also implement an adaptation algorithm to determine the quality of next segment that purely uses the buffer occupancy as adjusting factor where we request the better quality video with the higher buffer occupancy. Experimental results indicate that the quality of the video the client have received is enhanced and the throughput of network is improved.
