A research on the relationship between Kalman filter and phase locked loop

An increasing number of researchers focus on the combination of Kalman filter and PLL since the late 1980s, when JPL(Jet Propulsion Laboratory) firstly proposed a carrier tracking method which utilized Kalman filter to assist PLL. This paper analyzes the relationship between Kalman filter and PLL and presents the reason why choose Kalman filter to assist PLL. The specific formula derivation in this paper indicates that Kalman filter is a special PLL with a variable bandwidth. Therefore the contradiction between the tracking accuracy and tracking ability in conventional PLL is solved in some degree. Consequently, the utilization of Kalman filter in PLL offer a novel idea to design GPS signal receiver.
