The paper focuses on data theft and its impact on organization. It has become trivially easy to copy large amount of data from almost any computer using ever-higher-capacity portable storage devices, such as CD/DVD, Hard Drives, USB pen drives, etc. The development of new forms of communication like web-mail and e-mail had made it easier to transfer key files from organizations to any part of the world often in bulk. The study then further explores its consequences to the organizations along with its legal, operational and compliance issues. Some of the detection and mitigation solution available will be discussed after presenting the threats and their associated risks. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive discussion on data theft and its prevention, and serve as an initial point for businesses in their fight against it.
