Alun Robert's letter on the power of PCs (February, p14) highlights the role of powerful modern software packages for solving mathematical problems posed in physics. Gone are the days when one had to plot a graph by hand or do the least-squares fitting oneself. The most intractable differential equation can be solved and the most impossible integral integrated.
