An effective computational approach to the comprehension of purposeful English dialogue

Roger C. Parkison · 1980

This thesis describes a natural language comprehension program which permits a person to communicate with an application program in ordinary English. There are no specific restrictions on the vocabulary or grammar which the person may use. The subject area of the application program provides a semantic context within which any input to the program is analyzed. The language comprehension program is a bottom-up analyzer which uses a mixture of syntactic simplifications and semantic rules to identify the underlying meaning of an English input. This program has been used successfully for several years as one component of a computer simulation of paranoia known as PARRY.
