Responding Proactively to the Problem of Compromised User Accounts

In this column, two academic libraries explore their strategies for addressing the problem of illegal downloading of vendor content as a result of compromised or hacked user accounts. Rowan University Libraries runs a daily PERL script to identify the systematic download of licensed library content through a distributed compromised account. Rice University worked with their campus IT Security to automate the process of monitoring the EZproxy logs using Splunk, a real-time operational intelligence application.
