Automatic Music Transcription
Martin Piszczalski, Bernard A. Galler · Computer Music Journal · 1977
Our research aims at the automatic transcription of musical sounds into the corresponding common music notation representation. The analysis system and strategy described here have been applied to several short, performed compositions and have produced notation very similar to that which was originally played. We are currently restricting input to instruments with a relatively strong fundamental frequency, specifically flutes and recorders. The system should be expandable to instruments with more varied timbre and to polyphonic music. The overall design strategy is described in detail, followed by the actual implementation employed. This paper is a progress report; we hope in the next year of our work to extend greatly the variety of sound input and the possible types of analyses.
