An Investigation into Power Assisted Metal Spinning

A. Younger, A. J. Foster · 1977

The power consumption and the tool forces have been measured on a power assisted spinning lathe during single-pass spinning. A simple shape was spun from aluminium and mild steel discs of varying diameter and thickness using two different tool forms. The motor power consumption was shown to be dependent on the tangential force exerted by the tool. Both the power consumption and the tangential force showed a single maximum value during the tool travel, this value increasing with disc diameter/thickness ratio. The axial force had a maximum coincident with the tangential force but then decreased to a maximum in the opposite direction. The axial force was more dependent on the tool form than on the disc geometry.
