Computers As Tools For Evil
Michael P. Sheetz · 2012
Traditionally, the topic of computer crime has been segregated into those crimes that are strictly computer in nature, such as computer trespasses and theft of computer data. Lately, the more reasonable view is that any crime in which a computer is used in some aspect of the offense can be considered a computer crime. This chapter discusses some of the many ways in which computers and digital technology have insinuated themselves into the criminal realm (or, perhaps, the criminal realm has insinuated itself into the world of digital technology). Either way, the result is the same: Computers and digital technology have impacted criminal investigations in previously unforeseen ways. Although crime has been around much longer than digital technology, both areas have merged to present new challenges to computer forensic investigators. Some of these challenges require investigators to think outside the predefined realm of experience and employ creative solutions to problems.
