A First Look at C++

Chandan Sengupta · 2012

At present, most C++ compilers come as a part of an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), which combines an editor, a compiler, a linker, and a number of debugging and other programming tools. The most popular IDE is Microsoft's Visual C++.NET. The technical name for the code one writes in C++ is source code. Most C++ editors save source code files with a.cpp filename extension. It is safer to follow the convention of using the .cpp extension if one creates source code files using a text editor. Running a C++ program means running or executing its executable file. In an IDE, this is a matter of clicking on the appropriate toolbar button. This chapter presents that the vocabulary of C++ language comprises less than 100 keywords. The primary unit of a C++ code is the statement, which plays a role similar to that of the sentence in English. One will note that all C++ keywords are spelled with lowercase letters only.
