Network and service operations

Andy Valdar, Ian Morfett · Institution of Engineering and Technology eBooks · 2015

In this paper we have addressed the wide ranging subject of a Telco's operations - i.e. all that is involved in running a day-to-day telecommunications business. We concentrated on the customer service and network management support systems. A number of simple architectures and models were introduced to help analyse the subject. Finally, the generally least glamorous part of operations, namely processes, was addressed and we recognised their contribution to the costs and quality of service offered to the customers. As a concluding thought for this chapter, we note that while it is invariably glamorous new shiny technology that captures people's interest - even those working in the Telco - it is the prosaic, but vital, areas of support systems, organisation and processes, that usually determine the success of a new network or the launch of a new service.
