Predication, nonverbal stative predicates, and copular sentences

Isabelle Roy · 2013

Abstract This chapter defines the background and the premises of the work. It is composed of a review of the literature on nonverbal predication and lays out my own assumptions, namely that predication takes place in a single structural configuration involving a PredP projection responsible for introducing an external argument. It also presents the main issues raised by the view that predication always takes place in a PredP construction, in terms of deriving the meaning differences between different types of nonverbal predicates found in this context. These issues are later addressed in the rest of the book.
