EXAMPLES OF NUMERICAL SPACETIMES
Miguel Alcubierre · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2008
This chapter discusses the application of the techniques of numerical relativity to some simple spacetimes. It considers three different types of example, starting from 1+1 ‘toy’ relativity, and moving on to the case of spherical and axial symmetry. It discusses some of the special problems arising in each case, such as the issue of gauge shocks in the 1+1 case, and the regularization of the equations in both spherical and axial symmetry. It also gives examples of numerical simulations of simple physical systems, such as the evolution of Schwarzschild, the collapse of a scalar field, and the evolution of a Brill wave spacetime.
