Modern transportation systems have growing reliance on information systems and technology. Unfortunately, many such systems are vulnerable to cyber attacks, which could result in prolonged service interruption, loss of confidential information, theft of fares, and even loss of human lives. The need for better security and dependability of computer systems has prompted tremendous research efforts in the last decade. While much progress has been made, there is still a significant gap between the ideal and the reality. This paper describes a novel intrusion resilience software architecture that could bring the much needed robustness into critical transportation infrastructure against various cyber attacks. The core contributions of this approach include an append-only logging mechanism, which prevents an adversary from corrupting or deleting important data, and an automated intrusion recovery mechanism, which enables a system to resume normal operation quickly after the detection of a cyber attack.
