Searching and Seizing: The Investigator's Role

Judith M. Collins · 2012

This chapter describes how investigators carry out searches and seizures. The evidence obtained primarily from the Internet and surveillance, together with leads provided by a bank fraud investigator or police officer, often provides the basis for issuing a warrant. The investigator should be able to understand the technicalities involved in the confiscation of computers and equipment and preserve the evidence they may contain. The investigators, with knowledge of the crime, the criminal, and the methods of identity theft investigations, can collect the probable evidence that police officers need to bring a case to trial and send a suspect to prison.
